And What is with IMUA?
Beginning in the mid 1980s in the Gaston School District,
Mr. Henry Kaulia (Pacific University 1982) brought his Hawaiian spirit to our town both as an educator and coach.
In 1984, he along with Kyle Kobashigawa (current owner of Frye’s Action Athletics), took over the boy’s basketball team and infused the Hawaiian term IMUA into the team’s culture.
In Hawaiian the word IMUA means to press forward. When the Hawaiian warriors went into battle the term IMUA was used to keep pressing forward. When things were getting hard and not looking good the high chief would yell IMUA and the warriors would respond IMUA!
Breaking every team huddle, “IMUA” was bellowed leaving many wondering what was being said. The IMUA spirit soon spread to other Coach K coached teams and Gaston Student/Athletes.
In April of 2006, Coach K tragically passed away at age 45, but his impact can be felt in Gaston to this day. The IMUA Golf Tournament has been named in tribute to Henry and directly impacts the athletic programs of Gaston High School.
